Sandy Triplett and Wayne Roper will co-chair the track and field competition which closes the 16th annual Northwest Louisiana District Senior Olympics May 17.

An 18-hole golf tournament opens the 22-event card for those men and women 50 years old and older.

Triplett and Roper are decorated veterans of the Senior Olympics and running.

In 2007 at the National Senior Games in Louisville, KY., Triplett  earned seven top ten finishes against the best female athletes in the U.S. and Canada in the 55-59 age group.  That included a silver medal in triathlon, a bronze in high jump and a silver with her 4×100 relay team. She also was fourth in the 1,500, 400 and 800 meter events, sixth in javelin and seventh in shot put. Sandy was in on the founding of the River Cities Triathlon and has taken part in all 27 of them.

Roper is a former winner of the Jesse Lanier Memorial trophy for victory in the district’s 1,500 meter event. Wayne, who helped Stamps (Ark.) High School to state track championships in 1964 and 1965 before moving on to Southern Arkansas State, continued road racing as he aged and has ranked in the top 10 of his age group for 20-plus years. He has captured the NW district 400 and 800 meter double for the past three years in his age bracket.

Entry forms for the 16th NW District Senior Olympics will be available at YMCA branches, Caddo and Bossier parish Councils on Aging and parish libraries on March 16. Besides golf and track and field, district events include biking time trials, bowling, horseshoes, marksmanship, shuffleboard, table tennis, washer pitch, throws for accuracy, recreational one-mile walk, Red Neck golf, miniature golf, darts, chess, table games, bocce ball and bean bag baseball.

The track events (50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 meters) will include a special division open to runners 40 and over.
