Brosset posted 270 points under the detailed scoring system of the event which requires participants to throw footballs, softballs and Frisbees through a ring target from different distances. Brosset won the gold in the 70-74 age bracket in the hottest competition of the day. Harold McEachern (240) won the silver medal and Bill Snow (230) won the bronze.

Smith’s 270 was 60 points better than Curtis Cooper in the 75-79 age bracket.  John Grimsley won the bronze in the bracket.

The Krewe of Elders, virtual new kids on the block, rallied to beat Better Than Best, the defending champion, in NW La. District Senior Olympics Bean Bag Baseball.Jeri Lancaster’s triple plated the winning run in a 30-29 victory that decided the title.

Better Than Best seemed to be bouncing off the floor in the competition. It beat Springhill Medical Center II, 31-22, to survive the loser’s bracket and reach the showdown with the Krewe, a team which was formed this year and proceeded to breeze  through the competition undefeated and into the title game. Better Than Best would have to win two games against the Krewe to claim the title and it looked as if it was well on its way in the first game, jumping out to a 12-2 lead.

But the Krewe kept fighting back and carried the day.

Springhill Medical Center II won the bronze medal.

In the championship of the Assisted Living Division, Live Oak Retirement Community defended its title and won for the fifth time in a row, beating Azalea Estates, 33-14. The win came despite a rarity by Ella Mae Juneau who had four triples in as many at bats.

Cotton Barnes Paces Senior Living Washer Pitch

Filed under: General News — gerry @ 11:58 am

Cotton Barnes, a former quarterback who is in the Centenary College Hall of Fame, showed he knew a thing or two about washer pitch, winning the gold medal in the Senior Living Division of the NW La. District Senior Olympics.

Barnes, a versatile athlete for Centenary in the 1940s when the school fielded a football team, signed a professional baseball contract with the old Shreveport Sports of the Texas League out of college.  But WWII interrupted those plans and, after a distinguished service career, he returned to Shreveport and became one of the area’s best football officials.

Barnes claimed the gold medal in the age bracket for those from 89-92 years of age.

The pupil outdistanced the teacher in the NW La. District Senior Olympics Washer Pitch competition May 5 when Dianne Lewis captured the gold medal in the 55-59 age bracket for women.

“I taught her how to play,” lamented Lillian Trammel in good natured ribbing. Trammel, who won a medal last year, was shut out this time, but seemed to enjoy the win by her pupil who solidified her medal  with a solid victory over Trammel in the day’s final match.

Teri Ringey won silver and Joyce Freeman bronze in the age division.

Husband and wife duo of Bill and Atlean Snow repeated as gold medalists in their age brackets.
