After a silver medal run in 2013, The Glen Gophers will try to reach the gold standard in the NW La. District Senior Olympics Senior Residence Beanbag Baseball in the 2014, squaring off against the Summerfield Estates Sluggers April 15 in the Horseshoe Casino Riverdome.
The Gophers punched their ticket to the gold medal battle by beating Azalea Estates Honey Bees (21-14), Live Oak Rookies (23-22) and Live Oak Astros (19-18) in the winners’ bracket of the target game that mimics action of baseball or softball. Summerfield opened play by beating the 2013 Gold Medal team, the Waterford Warriors (19-15), but lost to the Live Oak Astros (14-6) to slip into the comeback bracket in the double elimination tournament. The Sluggers tipped Azalea Estates (10-8) and then walked a tight rope back into the championship match with final inning heroics. Two comeback wins, over the Live Oak Rookies, 14-13, and the Live Oak Astros, 20-19, either started or ended with CeCe Patton. Her team down by three runs to the Rookies, she opened the home half of the last inning with a home run. Later with the Sluggers down by a run, Charles Ledbetter came up with a bases loaded home run. Then in a battle with the Astros when Summerfield needed three runs to win Patton doubled home the winning run with two out.
The Astros wound up with the Bronze Medal.
