Tommy Poljak readies a serve.

Tommy Poljak and Gail Lowry captured gold medals in the NW La. District Senior Olympics tennis championship at N. Bossier Tennis Complex April 13-16.

Poljak, a former president of the Tennis Federation of Yugoslavia and Davis Cup official for that country, won the men’s open gold medal and Lowry claimed two gold medals in doubles in the 2.5 division, teaming with Sam Merritt for the men’s tandem title and with Ann Swor to win the mixed doubles.

Sallie Joiner and Jennie Johnson claimed the women’s 2.5-3.0 doubles gold medal.

In one of the best matches of the tournament, Poljak, seven-time LSOG singles  champion, beat H.P. Elliott, 1-6, 6-1 (11-9). That was one of three consecutive matches on the feature courts that required the 10-point tiebreakers to settle. Joe Jernigan defeated Gordie Ward, 1-6, 6-4, (10-7) in men’s singles and then Patti Guanella and Ellen Francis defeated Dian Cord and Karen Tyler 7-5, 4-6, (10-8).

“There have been some really well-played matches,” remarked Bossier Tennis Complex pro Elana Engleman after watching two days of the event.

Because of previous commitments and travel, some matches remain to be played to settle the 3.5 and up women’s doubles and the 3.5 and up mixed doubles divisions.
