Newcomer Tim FitzGerald and frequent visitor Charles Allen won divisions of the Northwest Louisiana District Senior Olympics bike trails April 25.

FitzGerald posted the best 5-K time (seven minutes, 11 seconds). The 57-year-old president of TFG Financial LLC, who trains with Team LaS’port, the club he helped found, was 33-seconds better than Allen, who captured the 65-69 age bracket. The District Olympics gold medal will have to share space on the FitzGerald mantel with masters championships he’s won in  Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. “I’ve heard a lot about this competition but this is the first time I could make it,” FitzGerald said. “But I’ll be back.” Due to a prior commitment, FitzGerald had to pass up the 10-kilometer trials which were run on Ellerbe Road from the Frierson Road intersection.

Allen, from Texarkana, Ark., dominated the 10-K with a 15:33 time. After his sweep, he said he was pleased with the effort.  “This  is the event I prime for all winter,” Allen said. “I spend my training building for it.” Allen, who was a standout in the 2009 bike trials, said he felt his preparation, which is made up of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hour sessions three times a week, is tailored to get him ready for the two District distances. He said post-race that he would give the winter work a good grade.
Second-best time in the 10-K, which faced some stiff head wind coming home, was posted by Bob Crosby (16:11).

Terry Harkey and Sandi Triplett captured two golds each in the women’s division.
