Here we go again–for our 20th time.

The NW La. District Senior Olympics marks the milestone March 24-May 19 after our most successful season (2011 drew 570 competitors) and acceptance of many old standby events and some new ones points to an even bigger 20th anniversary edition.

The biggest new news is that Horseshoe Casino will host the Senior Health Fair and opening ceremonies Wednesday, Arpil 18, in the Riverdome, and the Harrah’s Louisiana Downs Sky Room will be the site of the Celebration of Athletes at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 23.

Bowling leads in the newnest competition, adding Scotch Doubles and Nine-pin No Tap to the old standbys mixed doubles, gender doubles and singles. And the new events will take place in new surroundings–Holiday Lanes in Bossier–while the standbys remain at All-Star Lanes on Mansfield Road.

Fencing and Martial Arts are on the calendar for the first time, the former being held in conjunction with regional competition at the Shreveport Convention Center May 12.The martial arts competition is still in the planning stages.

Basketball Team Hot Shot will be added with two-person co-ed teams competing for high aggregate score. The male shooters will shoot 10 free throws followed by a trip around the hot shot stations. The female member of each team will shoot from and adjusted free throw line and hot shot spots. Time will be a factor in the scoring.

And there’s a new name on the schedule–Ladders Golf.  It’s old Redneck Golf using the correct name of the game.

Archery was a big success last year and it will continue on the schedule. But there’s a twist.  There will be a trophy for the best combined performance in marksmanship and in archery.

The schedule begins March 24 with the very popular bean bag baseball competition. It will stretch over two weekends as winners will keep moving forward toward the finals during the Health Fair.

In all, our 20th birthday should be quite a memorable District competition.
