Bowling Boom Continues

Filed under: General News — gerry @ 2:10 pm

When the 21st NW La. District Senior Olympics begins April 5, the growth of bowling continues with the addition  of team competition to the schedule.

Already on the slate are Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, 9-Pin No Tap and Scotch Doubles, the last two added in 2012. Team competition will be held May 24 at Holiday Lanes as will 9-Pin No Tap (May 22) and Scotch Doubles (May 17). Team bowling will consist of four-member teams and may be made up of four female bowlers or one male and three female bowlers.

Mixed Doubles (May 8) , Doubles (May 10) and Singles (May 15) will return to All Star Lanes and, along with No Tap and Scotch Doubles, be part of a new  Bowling Sweepstakes Award. “We will use the age group finishes of all five events to determine one male and one female bowler as our Sweepstakes champions,” said District Coordinator Doyle Blasingame in announcing the new contest. In each of the five, a gold or first place will acrue three points, a silver or second place two points and a bronze or third one point.  The male and female earning the most points will rule.

To be eligible for the Sweepstakes award, bowlers must take part in all five events. Again, only one male and one female will be named Sweepstakes champion.

“Bowling accounts for more participipation than any other sport in our district,” Blasingame said. “We are pleased we can increase our porgram to accommodate its popularity.”

There will be similar Sweepstakes Awards in throwing and in golf.  Participants must take part in darts, accuracy throws, bocce ball, horseshoes and ladders golf to qualify for in the Throws Sweepstake. Participants must take part in golf, miniature golf, chipping and putting to qualify for the Golf Sweepstake.
