The 22nd Northwest Louisiana District Senior Olympics began Saturday at Bossier Knights of Columbus Hall with Beanbag Baseball competition, but the Knights of Columbus team found nothing like “home field advantage.”
The Knights team ran into an opening day buzz saw, losing in the first round of the tournament, 20-16, to the Beanie Boppers, the 2013 runners-up in Beanbag Baseball, the target game which mimics the outcomes of real baseball. Then in the elimination bracket the Knights fell to the Silver Sluggers, the 2013 Gold Medal winners, 16-9. Afterwards one of the Knights players smirked, “We’re building character this year.”
The Silver Sluggers were roughly treated in spite of their 2013 success, falling in the opening round to the Young Guns, 25-22. It was an emotional Young Guns team which was saddened by the resent death of one of their founders and faithful participants, Lessie Copperrider. The Young Guns bounced back after trailing by 14-9 through four innings to tie the game at 15-all in the fifth. A six-run final inning, highlighted by Robert Bertrand’s home run, sealed the win.
In the elimination round, the Sluggers followed their win over the Knights with a 36-14 victory over the David Raines team and then subdued the BCOA Benton Tigers, 30-8.
And about that buzz saw, the Beanie Boppers. After beating the Knights, they nipped the Young Guns, 28-26, and then easily beat The Diamonds to remain unbeaten in the winner’s bracket. Their next foe is the Go Getters on April 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Kaycee Hall. The Go Getters had some tense moments but remained unbeaten, edging SMC Sluggers 21-20, skimming by David Raines 12-10 and nicking Harry’s Who Dats 17-6 to earn the spot alongside the Beanie Boppers in the winner’s bracket.
In the elimination bracket on April 12, the Young Guns face Harry’s Who Dats and the winner will vie with the Silver Sluggers for the right to play the loser of the Beanie Boppers-Go Getters contest. The winner of that encounter plays the winner of the Beanie Boppers-Go Getters game in the Gold Medal game on April 15 at the Riverdome of the Horseshoe Casino during the District Olympics opening ceremonies and health fair. The Who Dats beat the Sometimers 13-4, beat BCOA Benton 16-1 and then fell into the elimination bracket with the loss to the Go Getters.
The District Olympics continue until May 28, with 23 separate sports and games for male and female competitors 50 and older. Entry forms and information are available elsewhere in this website.
