It took husband and wife Ray and Vicki Cella 162 strokes to get around the Shreveport Country Club golf course Friday. For their work they each won gold medals in the NW La. District Senior Olympics golf competition.
Ray shot three over par 39-35–74 to win the age bracket for men 65-69 years of age. Vicki eagled the 307-yard (women’s yardage) fifth hole on the way to a 44-44–88 score, six strokes better than Cathy Buckley in the women’s division of the event for 50-year olds and older.
Dywane Pickett won men’s 55-64 age grouping with a 43-36–79 and Johnny Buckley won men’s 70-78 with 40-40–80 to finish 2-3 behind Ray Vella in the men’s division overall scoring. Tom Bachman (48-47–95) won the men’s 80-plus gold medal.
Don Ashworth shot 37-43–80 also but was edged by Buckley in a scorecard playoff.
The Cellas are SCC members, so a little home course knowledge helped out. “I drove the ball well and kept it in play all day,” Ray Cella said. He hit a hot streak on the back nine, birdieing three of the last five holes, starting at No. 14. A nine iron to within two feet of the hole led to a birdie at the 120-yard 17th hole. “I’d have to say that was my best shot of the day,” he said.
Vicki Cella, once a member of the Ladies Professional Bowling Association, wasn’t so happy with the hole after her two at No. 5. She posted a triple bogey eight on the next hole. “What a way to follow up, huh?”
