Maxim in boxing: If you want to beat the champ, you have to knock him out. And that fits Beanbag Baseball in the Northwest Louisiana District Senior Olympics.
Harry’s Friends, unbeaten through the opening round of this year’s Beanbag event, waited while the 2014 champion Young Guns battled through the Comeback Bracket with two victories Saturday morning at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bossier City. Then the Young Guns used a barrage of hits to beat Harry’s Friends 27-16 to force another game for the championship in the double elimination format. In that, Cindy Cason and James Russom banged out key extra-base hits at key moments to propel an 11-7 victory and give the Young Guns their second-straight Gold Medal.
Harry’s Friends finished with the Silver Medal and the Go Getters won the Bronze Medal.
Before the Harry’s Friends-Young Guns showdown, the Go Getters eliminated the Sometimers and the Guns eked out a comeback victory 20-19 over the Elders. Another one-run victory (20-19) over the Go Getters set up the Guns to take aim at Harry’s Friends.
“We just had too many zeroes in our innings,” said Geneva Strain, captain of the Friends in summing up the doubleheader.
