MCARTHUE’S HOMER TOO MUCH FOR ROAD RUNNERS I
Carolyn McArthur came up with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Rascals a lead that Road Runners I could not overcome in the championship of NW La. District Senior Olympics Bean Bag Baseball Saturday (April 2) at Bossier Knights of Columbus Hall.
The Rascals beat Road Runners II by 12-10 in a fiercely competitive final match, to complete an unbeaten 5-0 record and capture the Gold Medal in the double elimination tournament that lasted over two Saturdays.
Road Runners II, a team made up of Union Parish players, earned its way to the championship match through the Comeback Bracket, beating The Go Getters II, 15-11, The Diamonds 16-13 and Springhill Medical Center Sluggers II, 25-22. Because Union Parish is outside the seven-parishes that make up the Northwest District, the Road Runners were awarded an out-of-district Gold Medal.
Springhill Medical Center Sluggers II won the Silver Medal and Diamonds II copped the Bronze Medal among the 18 teams that opened the tournament March 26.
In the championship match, the two teams struggled through two hitless and scoreless innings before Barbara Wheeler’s triple broke the ice for the Road Runners in the bottom of the third inning. Wheeler’s hit led to six runs for the home team and followed a triple by Mildred Reeves. In the top of the fourth The Rascals bounded back, scoring six runs (the maximum allowed in an inning under Bean Bag rules) to tie the count, only to be tied at 8-all by the Runners in the bottom of the fifth.
A single Rascals run in the top of the sixth set the stage for McArthur’s winning hit. Trailing by 12-8, the Road Runners managed two runs in the final half inning but that wasn’t enough.
Bean Bag Baseball is a target game with players tossing bean bags, hoping to send them into holes that are marked 1-bag, 2-bag, 3-bag and homers and outs.
