MEDALS GIVEN IN CURTAILED EVENT

Ted Teel on the men’s side and Joyce Middleton on the women’s side led the way in the rain-plagued and lightening shortened golf championship of the Northwest La. District Senior Olympics at Northwood Hills GC Friday.

This year’s event was played in honor of the late Susan Berry, longtime golf coordinator for the district.

Even in the Senior Olympics, youth must be served. Teel was the youngest member of the men’s field at 57. He played in a bracket that ranged from 57-69 in age.

Because the weather finally shortened the event, Northwood Hills pro David Martinez came to the event’s rescue with a scoring method as fair as possible to all the players to facilitate medals distribution. In the shotgun start format, the women had completed eight common holes; the men nine. Martinez matched each player in relation to par across the common holes.

Teel’s one-under par was best among the boys and Middleton’s 7-over par was best among the girls.

Larry Joubert at two-over, Don Ashworth and Paul Clark each at three over, and Larry Rowe at five over were next in line among the men. Marge Snyder (+11), Gayle Gansfuss (+12), Pam Hawkins (+17) and Nancy Young (+18) rounded out the top five for women.

Teel, a South Carolina native, took up golf in 1980. “I ran track (the hurdles) in high school and didn’t start playing golf until I was in the military (for 22 years).” He is now a DOD employee at Barksdale AFB where he has won two base championships. He also is a champion in Golfweek Magazine’s North Louisiana Amateur Tour. The tour’s website shows Teel is currently in sixth position in the overall standings for players with 0-3.9 handicaps. He had a 78 score at Links on the Bayou course in Alexandria earlier this year.

In 2015 Teel won a tour stop at Crooked Hollow GC in Greenwood.and finished second at The Golf Club at Stonebridge in Bossier City May 2 and again on September 19, 2015.

Already postponed by a week due to weather, the Senior Olympics event forged ahead on Friday morning on a prearranged rain date as greyish clouds slipped overhead in fair playing weather for two hours. But at about 11:15, the skies darkened as a storm moved in. And then a bolt of lightening sent the field of 20 scurrying for shelter in the clubhouse. A 25-minute delay brought the golfers back out on the course for another hour of play. The end came at about noon when it appeared there would be more cells moving across the area.

“These medals we are giving out today should come with a battle ribbon,” quipped one tournament official. “These golfers fought the good fight.”
